"How do we know when irrational exuberance has unduly escalated asset values, which then become subject to unexpected and prolonged contractions?" Alan Greenspan December 5, 1996

By the fall of the year 2000, Greenspan had an answer to his question. The Presidential election played out ominously with a blue Gap dress hangover in the anxious atmosphere of a burst bubble.

I made these pictures to see if I could give expression to the fascination and dread ruthless neo-liberal idealism provokes in me, that the corporate architecture of New York City epitomizes. I was listening to the music of Terry Riley and Steve Reich a lot at that time. Their compositions gave me ideas for visually interpreting the drama and tensions of the circumstances.

I exposed the very last image in the series, during the early evening on new year's eve that year, of the World Trade Center twin towers. A friend accompanied me while I was photographing, and he talked about his memory of the 1993 bombing. "They really wanted to bring the whole thing down, and almost did." he said.

Standing in front of the towers that evening, the scale of such an event was only too easy to imagine.
